Melasma and hyperpigmentation have historically been some of the toughest skin conditions to treat because discoloration lies so deep within the skin’s layers and is hard for medications to target. However, with CosmelanMD, these conditions can be greatly improved.
Cosmelan MD is a depigmentation agent which acts by decreasing melanin from the skin. Melanin is responsible for the darkening of the skin and contributing to such factors as melasma and other skin discolorations. Melanin is increased by sun exposure, acne, aging, and hormone fluctuation.
Cosmelan MD has the ability to inhibit an enzyme (tyrosinase) that is involved in the process of causing skin darkening. Cosmelan MD leads to a decrease in melanin synthesis and hence to a decrease in darkened skin color. Studies have shown that Cosmelan MD can effectively reduce skin discolorations by up to 90% if used appropriately.
How does it work?
Cosmelan® is a topical depigmentation treatment, most typically used to improve the appearance of hyper-pigmentation and certain types of pigmented scarring. Both the face and the body can benefit from treatment with Cosmelan®. Cosmelan® inhibits the action of Tyrosinase, an enzyme responsible for the production of melanin. Melanin is increased by aging, acne, hormone fluctuations, sun exposure and inflammation, which can causes irregular darkening of the skin.
What will I expect after treatment?
You can expect a significant drying and peeling of the skin over a period of three to four days post-treatment after which, a noticeable improvement in the skin is observed. The areas of problematic pigmentation are greatly reduced, and the skin appears luminous, revived, fresh and smooth.
What are the risks or side effects of treatment?
Mild to severe peeling, redness, slight scabbing and sensitivity to the sun is normal in the first few days after the treatment. Some people experience dryness, tightness, soreness and itching for up to two weeks after the initial treatment. Those suffering from recurrent herpes infections may have a recurrence of cold sores.
